Ademola Lookman, the Forward of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Feels Pride in Being the Sole African Nominee for the 2024 Ballon d’Or
This evening, October 28, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Lookman, 27, will join the world’s best footballers at the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, starting at 8 p.m. Despite being the sole African contender, he’s in top form, as evidenced by his impressive performance in Atalanta’s 6-1 win, where he scored twice and registered two assists.
Lookman’s Ballon d’Or nomination is not only a personal achievement but also a source of pride for the African football community. “It’s an honor to be on the list, and it’s even more special to be the only one,” he shared with BBC Sport Africa.
This year, Lookman has accomplished monumental feats with both his club and country, highlighting the importance of this recognition. He became the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, as Atalanta secured their inaugural Europa League title against Bayer Leverkusen.
That historic evening, he reflected, “The way we did it was incredible. Leverkusen were on fire that season, and moments like those are what we dream of.” Since joining Atalanta in August 2022, Lookman has thrived under the guidance of coach Gian Piero Gasperini, adapting seamlessly to the team’s attacking style and football culture.
With his excellent form, Lookman is now a strong contender for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, alongside the likes of Nigerian player William Troost-Ekong and others. While he basks in his achievements, Lookman’s priorities remain on collective success, particularly with the Super Eagles. His contributions to their 2023 AFCON runner-up finish are not to be forgotten.
When asked about the future, Lookman replied, “I’m always striving for more. I’m looking forward to great things and maintaining my mindset.” With his current trajectory, he’s likely to achieve even greater heights.
