Police Inspector Arrested For Allegedly Killing Popular Enugu Musician

Police Inspector Detained in Connection with the Murder of Renowned Musician Okezie Mba

A police inspector attached to the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad in Enugu State has been taken into custody in relation to the death of Okezie Mba, a popular traditional Ogene musician.

According to a statement by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s spokesperson, the incident occurred on Friday, October 25, 2024, at around 8:10 p.m. at the Tactical Squad’s headquarters. Mba was leaving the premises after a friendly visit when, under unclear circumstances, the officer discharged his weapon.

Unfortunately, Mba was rushed to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. The coroner’s office has since taken possession of his body for autopsy.

Enugu State’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has launched a comprehensive investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State CID, to determine the motives and circumstances of the incident.

The Commissioner has expressed his condolences to Mba’s family, friends, and fans, describing the situation as unacceptable and assuring that disciplinary measures will be taken if the police officer is found guilty.

According to Ndukwe, “A police inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been detained for allegedly murdering traditional Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, also known as Igbo-Jah. The incident occurred on October 25, 2024, at 8:10 p.m. at the Tactical Squad’s headquarters.

Out of a friendly visit, the musician was leaving the Squad’s headquarters when the officer, for reasons yet to be fully established, fired his rifle, striking the victim. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending doctor. His body has been moved to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Commissioner Uzuegbu has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a thorough investigation to facilitate prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the police officer.

The Commissioner offers his deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and associates, describing the incident as unacceptable. He reassures that the police officer and anyone else found guilty will be held accountable and disciplined in accordance with the law, serving as a deterrent.

The Commissioner also urges those affected to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities to ensure justice.
