Tragedy Strikes UNN as Dean and Others Abducted from Highway
A senior academic at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Oguejiofo Ujam, has been kidnapped while traveling along the Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road. As a Dean of the School of General Studies and lecturer in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Prof. Ujam’s abduction is the latest in a growing pattern of kidnappings on this route.
Earlier this week, a social media influencer, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, shared the news on Facebook, urging prayers for the safe return of Prof. Ujam. “Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam was kidnapped yesterday morning along the Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka road. He is a lecturer at the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry and Dean of the School of General Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Our prayers are needed for his safe return to us, unharmed,” the post reads.
Colleagues and union representatives from the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter have also confirmed the incident, urging for urgent help for Prof. Ujam’s rescue. The group received a distress message, stating, “Professor Oguejiofor Ujam, the Dean of GS was kidnapped this morning along Opi-Enugu Road. Please, we need urgent help.”
The alarming rate of kidnappings on this highway has raised concerns about the safety of commuters, with residents calling for more effective measures to curb the rising insecurity. Despite frequent police and military checkpoints, the number of abduction cases continues to rise, sparking fear and anxiety among those who use the road.
