According to Edochie, punishing children for their mother tongue is unacceptable and can have long-lasting, detrimental effects. He emphasized the importance of teaching English for effective communication, but insisted that it’s equally crucial for children to grow up speaking their native language.
Edochie believes this mindset is a lingering relic of colonialism and urged Africans to reappreciate and reclaim their rich cultural heritage. He likened the double standard of suppressing African languages to the unlikely scenario of discouraging the Chinese from speaking their own language. He concluded by stressing the importance of not making fellow Africans feel inferior for being part of the continent.
