In Kano State, prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) figure Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso has called on northern leaders to unite in support of President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election campaign. He believes that backing Tinubu will strategically position the North to regain the presidency in 2031, according to Naijawebinfo.
Kwankwaso argued that a united front in supporting Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima could facilitate a seamless return of power to the North following Tinubu’s potential second term. Speaking with reporters in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso voiced concerns over divisive campaigns and criticisms coming from some northern factions, which he views as counterproductive to the region’s long-term interests.
“Northern politicians committed to the region’s future must ignore the calls for alternative southern candidates,” Kwankwaso emphasized. “A victory by another candidate in 2027 could mean an eight-year delay before power returns to the North.”
He downplayed concerns over the nation’s current security issues, emphasizing Tinubu’s proactive measures to address banditry and instability in northern regions. He also praised Defence Minister of State Bello Matawalle’s recent gains in combating insecurity in the North and Northwest, stressing the importance of unity among northern politicians in supporting Tinubu’s leadership.
Commenting on speculations about former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso possibly running as a vice-presidential candidate with a southern contender, he warned that such a move could push the North’s chances of reclaiming the presidency to 2035.
Kwankwaso concluded by urging northerners to rally behind Tinubu, stating, “Our greatest support for President Tinubu lies in standing with him through our prayers and dedicated efforts toward achieving peace nationwide.”
