Canadian Woman Jailed 11 Years for Smuggling Illegal Drugs into Nigeria

Court Sentences Canadian Lady To 11 Years Imprisonment For Importing Illicit Drugs Into Nigeria

A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been found guilty and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Munju was charged with importing 74 parcels of synthetic cannabis, weighing 35.20 kilograms, into Nigeria.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced that Munju’s conviction followed her arraignment by the agency in a Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu.

Munju was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on October 3, 2024, during the inward clearance of passengers on a KLM flight.

According to NDLEA, Munju claimed she was recruited to transport the illicit drugs through an online platform in exchange for 10,000 Canadian dollars.

She claimed she took the job to earn money for her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada, emphasizing her financial need.

Justice Dipeolu sentenced Munju to 11 years imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her by the NDLEA.

Prosecutor Abu Ibrahim presented evidence, including the testimony of a witness, Angela Mba, and tendered exhibits, including suitcases, documents, and laboratory test results, to prove the case.

The court convicted Munju based on the presented evidence and her guilty plea.

The judge sentenced her to six years imprisonment on count one and five years on count two, giving her the option to pay a fine of N50 million on each count instead of serving the sentences.
