A Pedestrian Bridge Collapses in Lagos, Causing Chaos
A newly constructed pedestrian bridge at the Five Stars Bus Stop in Iyana-Isolo, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, suddenly collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, leaving the surrounding area in disarray.
Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with the bridge collapsing in the wee hours of the morning at approximately 6:30 am. Without delay, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) sprang into action, working tirelessly to contain the situation.
Vital input from LASEMA played a crucial role in stabilizing the situation. Upon arriving at the scene, team members found that a significant part of the pedestrian bridge had given way, effectively shutting down half of the busy expressway.
According to LASEMA’s internal investigation, the collapse was triggered by an unknown articulated truck carrying heavy-duty equipment that collided with the pedestrian bridge, resulting in the appearance of cracks and, ultimately, the bridge’s collapse.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that a heavy-duty equipment-giant forklift was deployed to remove the obstacle and avert potential secondary incidents.
The bridge was promptly cordoned off by LASEMA’s Response Team to ensure public safety.
In an effort to ensure public safety, decommissioning efforts began immediately to remove the remaining concrete components of the pedestrian bridge.
