Groundbreaking Oil Discovery in the Western Niger Delta
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited and Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture (NNPC-CNL JV) has made a significant oil discovery in the shallow offshore region of the Western Niger Delta, further solidifying its position in Nigeria’s energy production sector.
The site, now operating under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, is a vital component of Nigeria’s energy sector, and this breakthrough is expected to have a lasting impact.
Chevron’s General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, confirmed the news in a recent statement. The well, which was drilled from September 2 to 13, 2024, reached a depth of 8,983 feet and encountered approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbons within Miocene sands, extending the productive Meji field.
The drilling operations were successfully completed on October 2, and the rig has since departed the location. This achievement aligns with Chevron’s commitment to developing its Nigerian resources and is a key part of their global exploration strategy, which focuses on discovering new resources to extend the lifespan of existing production assets and reduce development cycle times.
This discovery is a positive development for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, reinforcing the offshore region’s potential and signaling a new era of growth for the country.
The NNPC-CNL JV is committed to partnering with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to drive the country’s oil and gas development forward, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving this goal.
