Nollywood Star Jumoke George Reveals Dark Secrets of 14-Year Hiatus from Film Industry
For a long time, Nollywood actress Jumoke Amoke Olatunde George, popularly known as Jumoke George, had been absent from the film industry. In a recent interview with Oyinmomo TV, she has finally spoken out about the reasons behind her 14-year hiatus. According to Jumoke, the decision was influenced by the unacceptable demands of movie directors, including requests for sexual favors and derogatory comments about her skin tone.
Jumoke recounted an incident where a director bluntly told her that she was being blacklisted for refusing to give in to his advances. She remembered feeling overwhelmed by the immense pressure from multiple men in the industry, with some expecting her to engage in romantic relationships in exchange for roles. These requests came from at least 20 to 30 people, leading her to make the difficult decision to avoid the industry.
The pressure was further exacerbated by her skin tone, which was often criticized by directors who suggested she bleach her complexion. Jumoke refused to compromise, stating that she would rather maintain her natural beauty and was proud of her dark skin.
She recalled a meeting with a director at Femnar Cafe, where he bluntly informed her that a group of directors had decided not to cast her in any roles, citing her refusal to sleep with them as the reason. Jumoke was left feeling devastated and heartbroken, and it was at this point that she turned to prayer, imploring God to take control of the situation.
Jumoke’s courageous revelation sheds light on the darker reality of the film industry, highlighting the unwanted advances and colourism that many women, particularly women of colour, face in their daily lives. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that women must be treated with respect and dignity, and that their bodies and identities are not commodities to be exploited.
