PDP Governors Forum Chairman Reveals Why Wike has Escaped Suspension
A growing rift within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has seen some party chieftains calling for the suspension and even expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his perceived undermining of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. However, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, has clarified the circumstances surrounding Wike’s apparent immunity.
The feud between Wike and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has led to a deepening divide within the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), with tensions at an all-time high. Despite these developments, Mohammed remains optimistic about a resolution, citing the limitations of the Board of Trustees (BoT) in taking decisive action.
“In essence, you can’t suspend someone like Wike without the active involvement of the NWC. As governors, we exert significant influence, but the BoT is merely an advisory body, not a decision-making authority. That’s why we’re working to resolve this issue, not because we’re against Wike. His contributions to the party cannot be ignored,” Mohammed emphasized.
Transactions that have seen other notable figures leave the PDP and later return to hold important positions have also weighed heavily in Mohammed’s decision. “If Wike were to officially defect to the APC, I would still support his return to the PDP because, at the end of the day, he’s a friend. Many others have detached from the party, only to later regain prominence – and some have even risen through the ranks,” he noted.
