A recent confrontation unfolded on Waddle Street in Calabar South, Cross River State, between a group of ecstatic tenants and their landlord, Obong Ete, following allegations of theft.
A day of reckoning arrived for the landlord, as Naijawebinfo reports that the tenants accused Ete of pilfering personal items, including food, from his tenants. The dramatic scene unfolded just an hour before the residents were set to attend church.
Sources close to the incident revealed that a group of furious residents, spearheaded by Daniel Akpan, condemned Ete’s actions. According to Akpan, the 30-year-old landlord has been exploiting his tenants for quite some time, often taking their valuables, including yams, under the guise of possessing his late parents’ inheritance.
Another resident, Esther Eyo, shared a disturbing revelation: Ete’s history of theft dates back to a church, which led to worshippers placing curses on him. “This might explain why he cannot seem to control his own impulses,” she opined.
Stanley Edem, yet another tenant, corroborated these claims, adding that Ete had previously broken into several homes, earning the wrath of their occupants, who subsequently placed curses on him.
Following the severe beating, Ete was taken into custody at the Mbukpa police station, though the situation sparked concern from Cross River Police Public Relations Officer Irene Ugbo, who urged the residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “No one has the right to mete out punishment; they should have simply reported the matter to the authorities and allowed the police to handle it,” she emphasized.
