Renowned Medical Doctor, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, Freed After 10-Month Ordeal in Captivity
A determined medical professional has finally been reunited with her loved ones after a harrowing 10-month ordeal in captivity. Ganiyat Popoola, a respected doctor at the National Eye Centre, was taken hostage along with her husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy, on December 27, 2023.
While her husband was freed on March 8, 2024, following intense negotiations, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remained entangled in a desperate situation, leaving their families and colleagues deeply worried.
Thanks to the unwavering efforts of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which organized protests and urged the government to take immediate action, Dr. Popoola has finally been set free.
NARD President, Tope Zenith Osundara, shared the uplifting news in a phone interview with Daily Trust, expressing his relief at the outcome.
“We can confirm that Dr. Popoola was released today,” Osundara stated matter-of-factly. “For now, we are only allowing very limited access to her, to ensure her safety and well-being.”
When asked about the circumstances surrounding her release, Osundara revealed that no ransom was paid to secure her freedom.
