Court Sacks All NNPP Candidates Ahead Of Kano LG Elections

Breakthrough in Kano as Court Orders Sacking of NNPP Candidates

Ruling in a recent court case, a Federal High Court in Kano has invalidated the candidacies of all 44 local government chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). This decision was made by Justice Simon Amobeda, who presided over the case.

Following an application filed by the NNPP faction and one Engr. Muhammad Babayo, represented by Sunday Olowomoran, they sought to have the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) recognize a specific list of candidates as the legitimate representation of the party.

The defendants in the case include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), KANSIEC, Inspector General of Police, and the Director of the Department of Security Services (DSS). These parties are bound up in the conflict over the eligibility of the NNPP candidates in the upcoming elections.

According to reports, the court order dictates that INEC be restrained from releasing the voter register to KANSIEC, which is set to conduct the election on October 26, 2024. Additionally, KANSIEC is instructed to recognize and accept only the list of NNPP candidates submitted by recognized party chairperson Dalhatu Shehu Usman. Both the Inspector General of Police and the Director of the Department of Security Services are forbidden from providing security and protection during the election.
