Commitment to Local Government Elections in Kano State Remains Unwavering
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to conducting local government elections on October 26, 2024, despite a recent Federal High Court judgment that invalidated the poll process. The court had ruled that some New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members, serving as officers of the election commission, were in violation of the law.
During a flag-presenting ceremony for NNPP chairmanship and councillorship candidates at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the state would not tolerate any actions that would disrupt the peace enjoyed by its citizens. He emphasized that the state government and the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission had all the necessary constitutional backing to proceed with the elections.
“We will not allow anyone to undermine the peace currently being enjoyed by our citizens,” the governor said. “We have met all the legal and procedural requirements, and we are ready to conduct the election as planned. We will not be deterred by any attempt to disrupt the process.”
Noting that some individuals might try to thwart the election, Governor Yusuf was resolute in his commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible poll. “We are aware of the plans of our enemies to disrupt the election, but we will not succeed. The election will be conducted peacefully and credibly,” he added.
The governor also urged NNPP members to actively participate and prepare for the elections, praising them as loyal supporters of the party. He expressed confidence that the party would win all 44 chairmanships and 484 councillor seats, citing the widespread support it enjoyed from the populous.
Dr. Audu Ajuji, the Acting National Chairman of NNPP, echoed the governor’s optimism, stating that the election would be conducted peacefully and that the party would win all elective positions. The state NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, also praised the large turnout of supporters at the flag-presenting event, describing it as a testament to the party’s strong grassroots presence.
