Nigeria: Ensure Citizens Have Enough Blood to Live Before Taxing Them Further – Senator

Allow Nigerians To Have Enough Blood In Their Body Before Asking For Donation – Ndume Knocks Wale Edun, FIRS Over Proposed VAT Hike

Nigerian Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume Slams Plans to Increase Tax Regime, Citing Economic Woes

In a strongly-worded statement, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the National Assembly, has sounded the alarm over the proposed tax regime overhaul by the Federal Government. Ndume believes that the move would not only harm the economy but also mislead President Bola Tinubu.

According to Ndume, the economy’s managers are deliberately trying to make President Tinubu look bad in the eyes of Nigerians by pushing for an increase in taxes. He calls for a more sustainable approach that prioritizes the well-being of the people.

Speaking in a statement, Ndume emphasized that, “Before we ask for donations, let us ensure that the people have enough resources in their bodies.

He also expressed concerns about the proposed tax regime’s impact on low-income earners, saying, “I’m not saying people shouldn’t pay taxes, but we can’t ask those barely getting by to cough up more. Take a look at the situation – someone earning N70,000 minimum wage, with fuel now priced at N1,000 per liter. If we do the math, it’s like giving with one hand and taking away with the other. Tax authorities should focus on those who truly owe taxes rather than targeting the struggling masses.”

The senator drew attention to several instances of non-compliance among high-income individuals and entities, citing the example of Abuja, where many properties fail to pay property taxes. He also highlighted the fact that banks, despite making massive profits, often fail to pay their dues and collect taxes from their customers.
