Nigeria’s Treacherous Roads Force Celebrity Protection

Why I Cannot Drive In Nigeria Without Police Escorts – Tems

Nigerian singer and music producer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has revealed the reasons behind her decision to use police escorts when driving in Nigeria.

In a recent podcast interview with Big Boy TV in the United States, Tems shared her experiences as a celebrity in Nigeria. She shared that her fame often complicates her daily life, making it difficult for her to simply drive around the city without being recognized.

One particular incident stood out to her, where she almost got mobbed by fans while driving in Lagos last December. Since then, she’s had to revise her approach to driving in Nigeria, opting to use police escorts instead.

“I used to drive in Nigeria, but now I can’t. I almost got mobbed last December. If I want to drive, I must have police escorts at the front and the back,” Tems explained.

Meanwhile, Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared his own story of success in the music industry after finishing school.

He attributed his achievements to the choices he made after graduating from Babcock University. At the 2024 LAS annual summit, Davido spoke about his journey, revealing that he took a break from school to pursue his music career.

He shared his experience, stating, “I relate a lot to this topic because I’m living proof of a successful person after school. Let me share my experience. So, I went into the entertainment world after school, but I do have friends, siblings, my father who has a company and also a school that students graduate from.”

Davido noted that his family supported his creative choices, allowing him to follow his passion for music, unlike his siblings who took more traditional paths.
