Patrice Motsepe Confirms Re-election Bid for CAF Presidency

CAF President Patrice Motsepe Announces His Intention To Run Again

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to undergo a crucial leadership shift, as President Patrice Motsepe has announced his bid for re-election. This significant decision comes after receiving widespread support from a multitude of CAF Member Association Presidents and Zonal Union Presidents, indicating a strong foundation of backing within the football community.

Motsepe, a prominent South African billionaire, first took the helm of CAF in March 2021, securing the presidency through a notable election held in Rabat, Morocco. Following months of speculation and discussion, Motsepe has now publicly announced his intention to seek a second term, on October 25, 2024.

During Motsepe’s current tenure, marked by notable financial improvements in CAF’s operations, stakeholders have lauded his leadership and vision. These accomplishments were showcased at the 46th CAF Ordinary Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where various initiatives for the growth of African football were discussed.

However, Motsepe’s bid for re-election faces a formidable challenge. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has put forward Hany Abo Rida, a FIFA council member with a rich football background, as a competitor for the presidency. Abo Rida has garnered robust support from his federation.

In a statement, Ehab El-Komy, an EFA member, expressed unwavering confidence in Abo Rida’s capabilities, stating, “Hany Abo Rida is an exceptional candidate to lead the Confederation of African Football. He possesses the skills, expertise, and connection to the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, making him an attractive choice for football stakeholders seeking President Infantino’s support.” Abo Rida’s credentials in the sport make him a strong contender for the top position.

Motsepe’s rise to leadership in 2021 was facilitated by his unopposed entry into office, thanks in part to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s intervention, which led to the withdrawal of several rival candidates. The CAF presidential race is heating up, and it will be intriguing to see how the dynamics unfold in the months leading up to the 2025 election.
