Police Launch Investigation into Assault Alleged to have been Committed by Federal Lawmaker in Abuja
According to reports, a scuffle occurred between Federal Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh and a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in the Maitama area of Abuja. The incident happened when the driver, who was delivering a package at a residence in Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, on October 27th, 2024, requested the lawmaker to get out of his vehicle to receive the delivery.
The altercation between the two parties reportedly escalated, with Ikwechegh allegedly using physical force and verbal abuse against the driver. A viral video captured the moment Ikwechegh slapped and intimidated the driver, claiming his position in the House of Representatives would protect him from accountability, even if the Inspector-General of Police was informed.
Further, Ikwechegh allegedly damaged the driver’s phone, tore his clothes, and refused to compensate him for the service, threatening further harm. The police have since launched an investigation into the matter, vowing to maintain objectivity and uphold justice for all parties involved.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police emphasized their commitment to a comprehensive and impartial inquiry, ensuring that justice is served in the case.
The statement, referring to the incident on October 27, 2024, at the residence in Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, concluded: “The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into the matter and reaffirms its dedication to ensuring that justice is served accordingly.”
