Veteran Nollywood Star Speaks Out Against Excessive Police and Military Checkpoints on South East Roads
Actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, a veteran of Nollywood, has expressed his frustration with the multitude of police and military checkpoints dotting the roads in the South East region. He shared his concerns on social media after recently traveling from Ibadan to Lagos via the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Kanayo recounted his journey, pointing out that during a mere 80-kilometer stretch, he didn’t encounter a single police or military checkpoint. In contrast, he lamented that traversing even a short distance of 200 meters on roads in the South East often requires navigating multiple checkpoints, where commuters are subjected to both delay and humiliation.
The actor’s experiences have left him questioning whether the high number of checkpoints stems from a deep-seated dislike or hatred for the people of the South East. “Is this what it means to be part of Nigeria?” he queried, raising concerns about the daily struggles and indignities faced by those traveling through the region.
Kanayo’s outburst highlights the need for authorities to address the growing problem of over-policing and militarization of South East roads, which is wreaking havoc on the daily lives of commuters. It’s time for changes to be made to ensure the safety and dignity of all road users.
