Nigerian Singer, Timaya, Opens Up About How His Controversial Strategy Almost Destroyed Him
In a recent interview with Channels TV, Nigerian singer Timaya, also known as Inetimi Alfred Odom, revealed that his decision to use controversy as a strategy almost led to his downfall.
According to Timaya, his attempt to rebrand himself through controversy backfired, as the media took his antics to an extreme, causing widespread criticism. He notes that at the time, social media was still in its infancy, and newspapers were the primary source of news, making it difficult for him to escape the public’s prying eyes.
“My intention was to be controversial, but the press took it too far. It was as if they wanted to destroy me. They would publish one scandalous story after another, and I’d be the talk of the town for days,” he said, recalling the harassment he faced.
He added that his upbringing in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, also contributed to his penchant for stirring up controversy. “As a Port Harcourt boy, I was brought up in a way that encouraged me to take risks and push boundaries. It wasn’t easy, though, and there were times when I felt like I was losing myself in all the chaos,” he lamented.
Timaya’s controversial past is littered with high-profile feuds, including a dispute over a car gift with his ex-girlfriend and Nollywood actress, Empress Njamah, and a public spat with music producer Nico Gravity. He also made headlines for owing music royalties to his colleague, Terry G.
