Tensions Boil Over, Leading to Tragic Consequences for Manchester United Fan in Uganda
A recent Premier League match between Arsenal and Liverpool has taken a devastating turn, resulting in the loss of a 22-year-old Manchester United fan in Uganda.
The drama unfolded in the Kyobugombe Trading Centre, Western Uganda, when a heated argument escalated into violence following the match. The dispute began in a local video hall, where fans had gathered to watch the game.
The tension reached a boiling point after Liverpool’s late equalizer, when a Manchester United fan, identified as Benjamin Okello, celebrated by throwing popcorn at an Arsenal supporter. The provocative act sparked an intense argument between the two, which eventually led to a physical confrontation.
Tragically, things took a deadly turn when Okello sustained fatal injuries after being hit with a stick wielded by his opponent, identified only as Onan. The incident was reported to the authorities, who were informed that Okello had been rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away due to his injuries.
The Chairperson of Kaharo Sub County confirmed the incident, stating that he received information about the altercation early Monday morning. The details of the scuffle were as follows: “Two men fought in the Kyobugombe trading centre, and one of them was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he later died.”
According to the local media, the confrontation started in the video hall, where fans were gathered to watch the match. When Liverpool scored the equalizing goal in the 81st minute, the Manchester United fan, now deceased, began jubilating, and this angered the Arsenal fan. The Arsenal fan, in turn, picked up a stick and hit the Manchester United fan, causing him to fall down, according to the Kahara Sub County Chairperson.
The district police commander, Joseph Bakaleke, confirmed the incident, stating that authorities received reports of the altercation and that one of the fans later succumbed to his injuries. “We got information indicating that the two boys who were supporters of two different teams had a scuffle, and in so doing, one assaulted the other. It is alleged that when the assaulted one was taken to the hospital later alone, he met his death,” he said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. The family of the deceased is seeking justice, while the police are working to locate the suspect, who is believed to have inflicted the fatal injuries.
