Nigerian Singer 9ice Clears Up Rumors on Use of Yoruba Proverbs in His Music

Known for his unique blend of traditional Yoruba culture and music, singer-songwriter and record label owner 9ice, whose real name is Akande Abolore, has spoken out to clarify the origins of his frequent use of Yoruba proverbs in his songs.

Contrary to rumors that his knowledge of proverbs stems from his work as an herbalist, 9ice attributes his use of proverbs to his upbringing and the influence of his late stepmother. In a recent conversation with content creator Bae U, he shared the significant role his stepmother played in shaping his lyrical style.

“I’m not an herbalist, I’m a Yoruba man from Oyo state, and I learned all the proverbs from my late stepmum,” 9ice revealed. “While trying to create songs, I decided to use all those proverbs.”

With a successful music career spanning over a decade, 9ice is renowned for hits like ‘Street Credibility’, ‘No Be Mistake’, and ‘Living Things’. His 2008 album ‘Gongo Aso’ earned him the title of best hip-hop artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards that year, followed by four awards at the Hip Hop World Awards in 2009, including album of the year, artist of the year, song of the year, and best rap in pop album.

As the founder of Alapomeji Ancestral Records, 9ice has built a reputation for his distinctive music style, which often features Yoruba proverbs. However, he has mentioned that he has yet to sign any artists to his label due to the conflicts that frequently arise from record contracts.

Throughout his career, 9ice has consistently paid homage to his Yoruba heritage through his music, and his recent clarification on the origins of his use of Yoruba proverbs serves as a testament to the influential role his upbringing has played in his creative process.
