Kano CJ Orders Release Of 37 Prison Inmates

Justice Abdu-Aboki’s Initiative: 37 Inmates Released from Kano’s Goron Dutse Prison

To alleviate overcrowding in Kano’s correctional institutions, the Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has issued an order releasing 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre.

The decision was guided by the concerns of the inmates’ deteriorating health condition and extended periods of detention without trial. Many of the released inmates were struggling with serious health issues that had worsened during their incarceration, highlighting the need for proper medical attention outside the facility.

Justice Abdu-Aboki emphasized that releasing the inmates would enable them to seek necessary medical treatment, stating, “By releasing these individuals, they can now seek proper medical attention outside the confines of the custodial facility.”

The lengthy periods of detention without formal legal proceedings were also a significant factor in the release, as such practice is inconsistent with established judicial norms.

In a meeting with the released inmates, Justice Abdu-Aboki urged them to lead law-abiding lives and avoid behaviors that could lead to reoffending, offering words of encouragement for their reintegration into society. Each inmate received ₦10,000 to cover transportation expenses.

Kano State’s Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, lauded Justice Abdu-Aboki’s initiative, noting that it not only addresses overcrowding but also showcases a compassionate approach to the health and rights of inmates. He commended the Chief Judge for her commitment to enhancing the conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring fair justice for all.
