May Yul Edochie Addresses Critics Over Her Divorce
In a recent interview with AY Makun on his Glasshouse podcast, May Yul Edochie sought to clarify a common misconception about her. She faced criticism from men after filing for divorce from her ex-husband Yul Edochie in 2023, leading to misconceptions about her views on marriage and family.
“Some men see me as someone who is misleading their wives,” May said, attempting to set the record straight. She emphasized the importance of marriage as a foundation of family life, stating, “I love family, and I love marriage. But there is this misconception about marriage that is totally different, but ideally marriage is the basis of family. Without family, there would be no you or me; that’s how it used to be.”
May also took the opportunity to debunk claims that she was promoting divorce. “I am not in any way advocating divorce or separation in any way, not at all. Let me categorically state it here that I am not an advocate for divorce,” she emphasized.
This comes after she initiated divorce proceedings against her ex-husband, who took a second wife. She filed for divorce on the basis of adultery, citing Nigeria’s 1970 Marriage Act, which prohibits multiple spouses. May is seeking damages of ₦100 million from Yul and his new wife.
Throughout her divorce process and afterward, May faced criticism from some men and women who claimed she was promoting divorce. In her interview, she revealed her concerns for her safety and the safety of her children, which led to her requesting a court order to keep Yul away from their home due to his alleged erratic, aggressive, and threatening behavior.
