In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Nigerian international Calvin Bassey reflected on the pivotal moment that influenced his decision to play for the Super Eagles rather than the English national team. This moment was made possible by a memorable match between Nigeria and Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“At the time, Nigeria played Argentina and, although we lost 2-1, it was a great game. Messi, of course, is extraordinary – he scored a remarkable goal. It was truly exceptional, showcasing his incredible skill with a combination of skill and power, culminating in a stunning finish,” Bassey said, still in awe of the moment.
As Bassey grew up, he had the opportunity to represent multiple national teams, including Kenya. However, his ultimate choice was to don the green and white jersey of the Nigerian Super Eagles.
The turning point for Bassey came when he received a call-up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in 2021, marking the beginning of his international career with a debut in a tense 0-0 draw against Ghana.
