Nigeria: Beware of Counterfeit Condoms Entering Market

NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Against ‘Fake’ Condom In Circulation

Important Notice: Unlawful Condom Distribution in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is alerting the public about the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered condom brand, Foula Condoms, in Nigeria. This warning comes following a discovery by NAFDAC officials from the Post-Marketing Surveillance directorate, who found Foula condoms packaged in sets of three in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State.

The significant finding was part of a proactive surveillance study focused on registered condom products in Nigeria. The agency emphasized that the condom is not registered by NAFDAC for use in Nigeria and the labeling of the product is not in the English language.

Fortunately, condoms are a reliable and effective barrier method that can prevent unintended pregnancy and protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. To achieve maximum effectiveness, any barrier method must be used correctly.

However, NAFDAC warns that the illegal distribution or sale of unregistered condoms poses a risk, as the safety, quality, and efficacy of the products are not guaranteed. The agency notes that using substandard condoms can have serious consequences, including compromised protection against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Therefore, NAFDAC has taken steps to address the issue. The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove unregistered products from the market. The agency advises importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers to remain vigilant and avoid importing, distributing, selling, or using illegally distributed products.

NAFDAC also encourages healthcare professionals and patients to report any suspicion of the sale of substandard and falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office or through various reporting channels, including the E-reporting platforms on the NAFDAC website, mobile application, or email.

By being aware of the risks associated with unregistered and substandard products, we can work together to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical products and devices for the health and well-being of Nigerians.
