Nigerian Comedian Debunks Halloween Celebrations Among Countrymen

Comedian I Go Save Speaks Out Against Nigerians Who Celebrate Halloween

In a recent social media post, Nigerian comedian I Go Save sparked debate by criticizing those in Nigeria who celebrate Halloween, a tradition mainly observed in Western countries.

Go Save, whose real name is Otaghware Otas Onodjayeke, expressed his discontent with the growing number of Nigerians embracing Halloween, which he perceived as a Western custom. According to him, many people who look down on traditional practices, such as “Okere juju, Ifa, Ayelala, Igbe, olokun worship,” are the same individuals participating in Halloween, which he equates with idol worship.

In his post, Go Save exclaimed, “Una Dey celebrate Halloween but call Okere juju, Ifa, Ayelala, Igbe, olokun worshippers et al idol worshippers. Make una Dey do well na.”

The statement garnered diverse reactions from fans, with some agreeing with Go Save’s views while others disagreed. Some questioned the motive behind his criticism, while others acknowledged the uniqueness of traditional practices.

One user, @adelakuntufayl, praised Go Save, saying, “Of all the over 250 languages in Nigeria, he chose to speak FACTS!” Another user, @mash_beautybar, expressed their confusion, stating, “I just don’t understand why we Africans copy, and the White people never copy us.” @naturalboifilmz argued, “Halloweens don’t hurt people. I’ve never heard anyone use Halloween to curse people.”

The discussion surrounding Go Save’s post served as a platform for individuals to share their thoughts on cultural identity, the importance of preserving traditional practices, and the significance of cultural exchange. As the debate continued, users like @bodyworkbyamy_haven and @mr.dozix questioned the repetitive nature of such discussions and lamented the lack of understanding among Nigerians. @aronz_71 pointed out the tendency of many Nigerians to prioritize social media popularity over cultural awareness, stating, “See, Nigerians like clout a lot. That’s why most black Americans don’t like us.”
