Nollywood Actresses Open Up About Life-Changing Health Struggles
Blazing a new trail, Nollywood actress Ufuoma McDermott has shared her harrowing 12-year battle with kidney disease, revealing that she also lost her younger brother to chronic kidney disease. In an intense interview with media personality Chude Jideonwu, Ufuoma bared her soul about the challenges she faced due to her condition.
One of the toughest aspects of her journey, according to Ufuoma, was the constant need to maintain a healthy weight, a struggle she likened to “fraught emotions.” She was initially diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease and was advised by her doctors to slow down and rest, but she disobeyed the medication and ended up being diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease instead.
The actress shared that her brother’s passing was a huge blow, and she often thought about her own mortality. However, she found the strength to battle back and made significant lifestyle changes, which transformed the way she lived.
Ufuoma’s story is not an isolated one, as another Nollywood veteran, Ngozi Nwosu, has come forward with her own tale of health struggles. The 61-year-old actress revealed that she faced a serious kidney-related illness in 2012, which left her unappreciative of the lack of support from her home state of Abia.
During her recovery, Nwosu received vital assistance from the Lagos state government, courtesy of a female fan who referred to her as her “favourite actress.” However, despite her gratitude, Nwosu has made it clear that she will no longer offer her services for free to the Abia state government, following her negative experience.
“I have made it clear that there is nothing my state can call me for that I would go for free,” Nwosu said sternly. “They would pay through their nose for me to be there. I am from Arochukwu local government, Abia state.”
