After being arraigned for impersonation on Friday, social media commentator Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has been granted bail worth N2 million, accompanied by two sureties of equal value.
The court has decreed that VeryDarkMan must surrender his international passports and any other forms of identification.
The police arrested VDM due to his appearance in a viral video wearing a police uniform, sparking widespread outrage.
According to a statement issued by the police, an investigation is underway to address the unauthorized use of their official uniforms and equipment by VDM, as showcased in a video on his social media accounts last Thursday.
The bail conditions provided by VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, include: “Two million, two sureties in like terms. The sureties must deposit international passports, and they must provide proof of identification. The sureties must also provide an affidavit to ensure that the defendant is available throughout the trial.”
The statement goes on to specify that the prosecutor must verify the sureties’ addresses, and they must provide utility bills; the defendant must also provide an affidavit to be available for trial, with the sureties residing within the court’s jurisdiction, particularly in Abuja.
In a separate development, the Nigerian Police have responded to reports about the arrest and detention of the controversial figure, Verydarkman.
Previously, it was reported that Verydarkman’s associate, Kokopee, claimed that he was detained by the Nigerian police as part of an investigation into a viral video depicting him in a police uniform.
The police clarified the situation in an Instagram post, stating that Verydarkman has been arrested and is currently in detention, with plans to face charges in court for impersonation.
