Wealth won’t get you ahead in music, expertise and talent matter most

“Being rich will not give you a benefit in the music industry”- Singer Lojay

A Music to My Ears: Lojay Debunks Claim of Wealthy Artists’ Advantage

Nigerian singer, Lekan Osifeso Junior, better known as Lojay, has stirred up the debate on whether wealth gives an edge to artists in the music industry. In a recent interview with City 105.1 FM, the talented musician debunked the notion that rich artists have an upper hand, citing a different scenario altogether. He believes it’s often the opposite.

Lojay pointed out that being from a wealthy background can actually hinder one’s success in the music industry. He shared, “Nigerians love shaming the rich. It’s not unique to the music industry, but it’s a widespread phenomenon. Rich kids don’t have an edge; on the contrary, they often start out with a disadvantage. People assume they’re already set and don’t need much support, so their music may not receive the recognition it deserves.”

The singer, known for his hit single “Monalisa”, has an unique story to tell. Despite his affluent upbringing, Lojay’s talent has been his greatest asset, allowing him to succeed without the need for external influence.

When asked if he’d ever felt the sting of “rich-shaming”, Lojay quipped, “I’m undeniably talented. Let anyone challenge me on the mic, and we’ll see how it goes.” He emphasized that his success wasn’t reliant on his family’s wealth, and his parents had never used their influence to promote his music.

Lojay’s candid discussion on the topic highlights that talent, not wealth, is the key to success in the music industry. His refreshing perspective challenges the common assumption and serves as a valuable lesson for aspiring artists, urging them to focus on their craft rather than their bank account.
