Dubois’ Next Fight: Promoter Sets Sights Elsewhere, No Immediate Rematch with Joshua
Fans were eagerly anticipating a rematch between IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua following Dubois’ dominant fifth-round victory over Joshua in September. However, it seems their wishes won’t come true anytime soon.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, had initially expressed optimism about the rematch, but negotiations have stalled due to Joshua’s ongoing recovery from the “niggles” he suffered during their previous fight. The heavyweight champion is not yet ready to face Dubois, which has left promoter Frank Warren seeking alternative options for Dubois’ next bout.
Warren stressed that Dubois’ career progression remains a top priority and will not be delayed by any setbacks. “We’re looking at other options for Daniel’s next fight,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of keeping Dubois active in the ring. “I don’t see that happening next. We are looking at a couple of things at the moment and will make a decision. I was hoping to get it done quickly, but it won’t happen this time. We need to focus on Dubois and keep him on track for February 22.”
Warren’s focus on Dubois is evident, as he reiterated, “With the greatest respect, we’re in the Daniel Dubois business. He’s the one that matters to me, and he wants to fight on that date.”
This development aligns with IBF President Daryl Peoples’ recent announcement that Dubois is eligible to make an optional title defense against any ranked opponent before April 22, allowing for potential domestic bouts, including a potential clash with Fabio Wardley.
