A cleaner start for Plateau State: Governor inherits 42 abandoned projects worth N47 billion

Upon taking office, Governor Caleb Mutfwang inherited a daunting task – 42 abandoned infrastructure projects with a staggering price tag of approximately N47 billion.

The governor made this revelation while launching a five-day training program on Best Practices in Contemporary Construction and Procurement for the Plateau State Built Environment Sector.

In his opening remarks, the governor lamented that his administration’s efforts to address these abandoned projects have been hindered by the state’s standing in contract enforcement evaluations from the World Bank and the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).

Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo represented the governor at the event and emphasized the importance of the training initiative, stating, “This is the first in a series of capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing public sector performance.”

“The training aligns with our commitment to drive quality physical and infrastructure development through coordinated efforts between local and state authorities,” she continued.

The governor’s administration has allocated a substantial N130 billion for capital expenditure in the 2024 state budget, underscoring the need for strengthened capabilities among personnel involved in procurement and construction practices.

Mutfwang highlighted the challenges facing infrastructure delivery, including scope creep, cost overruns, and inadequate project risk management, which have led to numerous project failures and significant losses for the government.
