Edu Gaspar, a former Arsenal player, cherished his time with the club, winning two league titles and being part of the illustrious “Invincibles” team in the 2003-2004 season. He later returned to the club in 2019 as technical director, and in 2022, he took on the role of sporting director.
As Edu announced his departure from the club, he expressed the difficulty of his decision, stating that he was now ready to embark on a new adventure. While Arsenal will always hold a special place in his heart, he wishes the club and its supporters all the best for the future.
Edu played a pivotal role in bringing Mikel Arteta on board, leading to the club’s FA Cup victory in his first season. Although Arsenal hasn’t secured major silverware, Edu has been instrumental in shaping the team into a serious title contender. He has fostered a sense of camaraderie among Arsenal’s men’s, women’s, and academy teams, and he’s particularly grateful for the opportunity to work with Mikel, who has become a close friend.
Under Edu’s guidance, the club has attracted notable players like Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice. Although some early signings, such as David Luiz and Willian, had varying levels of impact, the team has consistently finished as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City.
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke acknowledged Edu’s contributions, thanking him for his dedication and commitment to advancing the club. Kroenke emphasized the importance of change and evolution, reiterating the club’s ambition to win major trophies. He reassured fans that the succession plan will prioritize this goal.
