Gunmen Attack Police Facility, Kill One Person in Nigeria
A reported attack on the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) facility at Owerrinta, along the Umuahia-Aba Federal Expressway, has resulted in the death of one person, a female detainee.
According to official reports, the attack occurred just after midnight, when a group of armed men, traveling in three Hilux vehicles, launched an assault on the facility. The assailants opened fire, and in the chaos that ensued, a female suspect was fatally shot during an attempt to break free from detention.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, released a statement in which he described the events: “An attack was launched on our facility at Owerrinta, and our officers responded swiftly, repelling the assault. However, the attackers used dynamite to blow off our roof, and in their attempt to free detainees, they opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of a female suspect.” The police successfully arrested one suspect and are currently investigating to identify other conspirators.
According to unconfirmed reports, the female detainee who was killed was being held in connection with a child trafficking case.
In a separate incident, two people were reported killed in the Obi local government area on Sunday, following a confrontation between an army officer and a police special constable from the Jenkwe Division. The incident occurred at Agyaragu Market and was connected to an investigation into a reported motorcycle theft.
A statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed that the suspect was initially apprehended by a police officer and a Police Special Constable from the Jenkwe Division at Agyaragu Market. However, a soldier, who was on leave from his assignment in Borno State, intervened and allegedly assaulted the police officers, injuring one of them.
