Ex-Presidential Spokesperson: “I Can’t Denigrate Peter Obi, He’s My Political Child”
As a former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe recently appeared on Channels TV Politics Today, where he made some intriguing statements about the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi. According to Okupe, he has a deep emotional attachment to Obi, having played a significant role in his political ascension, and as such, he refuses to publicly criticize or bring down what he helped build.
In particular, Okupe was responding to a recent comment made by Obi regarding the popular “Emi Lokan” slogan of Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Instead of directly attacking Obi, Okupe chose to clarify the context of Tinubu’s statement, which he believed Obi had misinterpreted. Okupe emphasized that Tinubu’s comment was aimed at APC delegates in Ogun State, urging them to support his bid, not at the nation as a whole.
“As an elder statesman and a Yoruba man, when someone like me is affected, I feel compelled to speak the truth,” Okupe explained. “At my age, if I couldn’t speak the truth, then there would be no point in continuing to live. According to me, what Peter Obi said was incorrect. He said that people in Ogun State should ask if they are buying bread cheaper, which is not accurate.”
In the past, Okupe had served as the director of Obi’s presidential campaign, but he had to step down following a court order that found him guilty of money laundering. Later, he resigned from the Labour Party.
