Former PDP Chairman in Ebonyi State Disputes State Congress Results
According to a statement made on Monday by Barrister Silas Onu, the former chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, no state congress took place in the state last Saturday. This is in direct contradiction to reports by Naijawebinfo, which claimed that Peter Nwele was elected as the new PDP chairman during the weekend’s state congress in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The supposed congress was overseen by a seven-member committee from the party’s National Secretariat, along with representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and various security agencies. Despite this, Onu is urging the public to discount the claims of the event, labelling it as merely a gathering of acquaintances.
During a press conference in Abakaliki, Onu strongly criticized the organizers of the alleged PDP state congress, accusing them of attempting to flout a valid court order that prohibited them from engaging in such activities. He also claimed that the event was a desperate attempt by a single individual to hijack the party, exploiting a previous misunderstanding involving an incorrect appointment to the National Working Committee (NWC).
“This is a direct affront to a valid court order,” Onu stated. “There are multiple cases pending in court, and the court has instructed that no actions be taken until the cases are resolved. Any individual who claims to have held a congress is simply wasting their time.”
Onu also raised concerns that the alleged congress was potentially funded by a mysterious benefactor aiming to destabilize the PDP in Ebonyi. “This individual, who has been suspended from their national officer role, may be using this ruse to justify the payment he received and create chaos within the party,” he said.
Onu concluded that the gathering was nothing more than a futile attempt to raise controversy and would hold no water in the grand scheme of things.
