Former Presidential Spokesman Defends Tinubu’s Reforms, Censures Hasty Judgments
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson for the Federal Government, expressed his support for the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Okupe, who previously served as the Director General of Peter Obi’s campaign, believes that Tinubu’s policies are necessary for the country’s survival and have been crucial in stabilizing the nation’s economy.
During the discussion, Okupe met with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja and found himself impressed with the administration’s economic policies. He praised Tinubu’s efforts to revamp the country’s economy, stating that while the current situation may be tough, it is essential to avoid national collapse in the long run.
Despite his previous support for Obi and having conceded that “the better man won,” Okupe emphasized that Tinubu’s policies, though challenging, are designed to achieve long-term stability. He urged Nigerians to remain patient, as transformative progress often requires sacrifices and tough decisions.
The nation continues to confront issues such as high inflation, subsidy removal, and other economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, leading to ongoing dissatisfaction among the public.
In his defense of Tinubu, Okupe stressed that the President still has a significant portion of his term remaining and should be given time to deliver. He noted that it would be unfair to judge him too harshly, stating, “Just 17 months, how much can he do?” Okupe expressed conviction that if given the necessary understanding, Tinubu would excel.
In his comments, Okupe was also critical of his former boss, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that neither of them could replicate the progress made by the APC administration. He emphasized that “talk is cheap” and that only actions speak louder, implicitly referring to his view that Tinubu is making the necessary changes to propel the nation forward.
