Tragedy Strikes in Obi Local Government Area as Two Lives are Lost Following a Confrontation between Military and Police Officers
A devastating incident has left a trail of destruction and loss of life in the Obi local government area, where a confrontation between an army officer and a police special constable has claimed two lives. According to sources, the incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon at the Agyaragu Market.
Reports indicate that the events began when a motorcycle theft was reported to the police at approximately 12:30 PM. In response, a police officer and a police special constable from the Jenkwe Division were dispatched to the area to investigate.
As the police officers were in the process of making an arrest, a soldier, who was on leave from his posting in Borno State, intervened and allegedly used force to resist the arrest.
According to eyewitnesses, the soldier brandished a knife and inflicted serious injuries on the police special constable. In response to this, the police officer overpowered the soldier, using his own knife against him. Both individuals sustained severe injuries, and the soldier later succumbed to his wounds.
As tensions escalated, a group of youths converged on the police station, setting it ablaze. The police responded quickly to the attack, neutralizing three of the attackers, with one later confirmed dead.
Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada, swiftly responded to the situation, deploying a unit of police mobile forces, counter-terrorism units, and tactical units to restore order in the area. Normalcy has since been restored, and an investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for the violence.
