Nollywood Actress Omoni Oboli Refuses to Interfere in Son’s Marriage
Renowned actress Omoni Oboli has made it clear that she respects her son’s independence and the boundaries of his marriage, choosing not to interfere in his wife’s life.
In a recent conversation on the podcast “Dear Ife,” Oboli shared her thoughts on maintaining a healthy balance between her role as a mother and her son’s new family unit. She emphasized the importance of recognizing that her son’s family is now a separate entity from hers.
According to Oboli, she always encourages open communication between her son and his wife, rather than resorting to interference. She shares an anecdote about a time when her son came to her to discuss a disagreement he had with his wife, and how she had to remind herself to let go and allow him to handle the situation on his own.
“Sometimes, my son will come to me and say, ‘Mum, Marelle doesn’t like this,’ and I have to catch myself and say, ‘Oh, I didn’t mean it that way.’ And it’s okay. The fact that your child can’t come to you to discuss his wife’s concerns is a problem in itself,” she explained.
Oboli stresses the significance of recognizing her son’s new family unit and allowing them the autonomy to build their own relationship. “I think people need to understand and realize that this is now another family. Yes, they are still part of your family, but they now have their own family,” she noted.
Omoni Oboli Recounts the Time She Lost a Movie Role for Refusing to Kiss the Director
In another conversation, Oboli shared a dramatic story about how she lost a movie role for refusing to kiss a film director during an audition.
On the “Glasshouse Show,” Oboli explained that she was returning to Nigeria after a brief hiatus to focus on raising her children abroad. During an initial audition, the director asked her to perform a romantic scene involving a kiss, which she was uncomfortable with.
According to Oboli, she politely declined the request, stating that she saw no reason to kiss the director on set. Unfortunately, this refusal landed her the dreaded “no role” outcome, and she ended up traveling back to Nigeria without securing the part.
