Tragedy Strikes Again: Two-Story Building Collapses in Rivers State, Claiming Life of Worker
A distressing incident has occurred in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, as a two-story building under construction has collapsed, leaving one person feared dead and another severely injured.
The incident, which occurred on a Monday afternoon, follows a similar collapse of a three-story building in Iriebe just a week prior, fortunately without loss of life.
An eyewitness, Jonathan Obey, recounted the events, stating that the building caved in while contractors were working on the second floor. He believes that the tragedy might be linked to deliberate construction infractions committed by the property developer, raising concerns about the quality of building standards.
According to Obey, the investigation revealed the use of substandard materials and a foundation that was only 3 feet deep for a 2-story building, which is against building codes. He also cited the absence of a center beam and pillars, as well as inadequate cement usage for the first decking.
In response to the incident, the Rivers State Government has sealed the premises of the collapsed building and declared the property developer, Vincent Nwoye, wanted. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, condemned the developer’s actions, citing gross negligence and a blatant disregard for building regulations.
Bipi emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward developers who disregard safety standards, stating that the government will use Nwoye as an example to deter others from engaging in similar practices. He also expressed sympathy with the bereaved family and the Ogbogoro Community, promising to take all necessary steps to notify the family of the tragic event and assist in the recovery of the remains.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, Samuel Anya, also expressed sadness over the loss, condemning the property developer for prioritizing profits over safety. He urged developers to prioritize the well-being of construction workers and prospective tenants, rather than focusing solely on financial gain.
