Nigerian artist CKay has weighed in on how his smile is perceived by the public. While many have praised his bright grin, he revealed that he doesn’t feel the need to always look happy.
In a recent conversation on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, CKay shared that people often tell him to smile more, with some even saying he has a nice smile and should do it more often. He believes this perception is largely shaped by the pictures people see of him, and that he only looks at people in real life who are close to him.
CKay tied his smile to his music, explaining that it’s a representation of his emotions, which can range from positive to negative. He’s not always feeling cheerful, especially when creating his music. In fact, his latest album is a reflection of the reality he’s experienced, not just the good times.
According to CKay, he doesn’t think it’s realistic to always look happy, as that’s not always the case for everyone. Rather, he believes music should reflect the full spectrum of emotions, including the negative ones, to be authentic.
