INEC Chairman Issues Stern Warning to Staff on Ondo Guber Election
At a stakeholders’ meeting on the Ondo State governorship election, held at the International Culture Centre in Akure, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, threatened to take drastic measures against staff who fail to perform their duties diligently during the forthcoming election.
Yakubu also urged political parties to refrain from instigating their supporters to engage in any disruptive behavior, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and successful election.
He announced that INEC will be addressing the staff, including the Electoral Officers from the 18 Local Government Areas, on Friday to reiterate the importance of their roles in the election process.
“The coming election is a multi-stakeholder event, and INEC has a crucial role to play, working in tandem with all stakeholders,” he said. “To ensure the success of the election, it is crucial that everyone plays their part.”
According to Yakubu, to help prevent impersonation and confusion, INEC has introduced accreditation tags featuring the names, photographs, and deployment locations of all party agents. He emphasized that these tags must be used and displayed at voting and collation locations.
The INEC Chairman also commended political parties for adhering to the accreditation process and urged them to follow the example of accredited observers and the media by using the tags issued by the Commission.
In a related development, Yakubu announced that candidates in the election are expected to sign the Peace Accord on Friday at 10:00 am at the International Culture Centre, a move he described as crucial for a peaceful election.
“I invite you all to honor the Peace Committee by your presence and to abide by the terms of the Accord for a peaceful election,” he added.
