Gunmen Abduct Catholic Priest In Imo

Renowned Rector of Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary Regains Freedom After Month-Long Captivity

Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, the Rector of Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Agenebode, has finally been released after being held captive for 11 days by suspected herdsmen in the Etsako East Local Government Area, Edo State.

Oyode was abducted during an evening prayer session and Benediction at the seminary on October 27, along with several other priests and seminarians. His captors demanded a ransom of ₦200 million before releasing him.

In a statement issued by Rev. Father Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, the seminary was attacked at around 7 p.m. on the day of the kidnapping, resulting in the Rector’s abduction and the safe relocation of the remaining priests and seminarians to a secure location. Official reports have been lodged with law enforcement agencies, and efforts are underway to secure the Rector’s release.

The Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, established in 2006, has produced over 500 graduates to date and serves as a vital institution for training future priests. In light of this distressing event, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi calls upon all people of goodwill to join them in praying for the safe release of Fr. Oyode.

But for How Long? The Wait was Worth It

Reports emerged early on Thursday morning confirming the Rector’s release from captivity. Although the church and police have not made an official announcement, a Facebook post from a Catholic member shared the good news.

Fr. Oyode’s kidnapping had taken a toll on the seminary community, with the Rector reportedly begging his captors to release the students and being taken away himself. His safe return brings a sigh of relief to all involved and serves as a testament to the power of prayer and perseverance.
