John Boyega says Nollywood must evolve to thrive

“Nollywood Needs A Change In Its Structure”- John Boyega

In a recent statement, Nigerian-British actor John Boyega has emphasized the need for changes in the Nollywood industry to elevate its standards.

According to him, filmmaking in Nigeria is not yet meeting its full potential and requires a team effort. He expressed this sentiment at a recent panel session at the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF).

Boyega cited the need for international partnerships, rigorous training, and government support to boost the industry. He used Marvel’s Avengers and Black Panther as examples of global box office successes, stating that similar films could be made in Nigeria.

To achieve this, he advised filmmakers to be humble, open-minded, and willing to learn from others. “We need to collaborate. We need to be humble,” he said. “We need to raise the standards. I want to see a Nigerian franchise that can make a billion naira at the global box office.”

Boyega also stressed the importance of research and authenticity in filmmaking. “If you think you’ve put a film together and you haven’t done research for the dialogue to be authentic, the extracurricular research outside of the role to see how the character will talk and walk,” he said. “Trust me, you’re not there yet. It’s important for someone to tell you at this level that you’re not there yet because how are you going to reach your full potential?”

He concluded by emphasizing the need for a structural change in the industry, citing the importance of workshops and training to improve the sector.
