UNIUYO to Celebrate Academic Achievements of Students and Faculty at Grand Convocation Ceremony
This Saturday, the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) in Akwa Ibom is set to recognize the outstanding academic performances of its students and faculty members at a grand convocation ceremony. A remarkable 174 students will be awarded first-class honours, a testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
The vice chancellor, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, revealed the impressive statistics during a press conference in Uyo, stating that the university will be graduating a total of 12,450 students this year. This includes 1,167 postgraduate degrees, 10,835 bachelor’s degrees, 411 diplomas, and 37 certificates.
When discussing the university’s academic achievements, Prof. Ndaeyo highlighted the institution’s remarkable growth, “In the 2020/2021 academic session, we produced 56 first-class graduates. Notably, in the 2021/2022 session, we produced a total of 118 first-class graduates, demonstrating a consistent upward trend in academic performance.
UNIUYO currently offers 100 programs across 117 departments within 19 faculties, with an impressive 90% of these programs fully accredited by the National Universities Commission.
Prof. Ndaeyo emphasized the university’s dedication to student welfare, stating, “We have partnered with private organizations to build and equip more hostels for our students, ensuring their comfort and well-being while pursuing their academic goals.”
The ceremony will also honor distinguished individuals with honorary doctoral degrees, including Chief Effiong Afiakurue, Mrs. Halima Zakari, and Dr. Itanwan James. Additionally, former Vice Chancellor Prof. Akpan Ekpo will be conferred with the prestigious title of Honorary Professor Emeritus.
Despite the challenges faced by the institution, such as insecurity, inadequate funding, manpower shortages, and land encroachment, Prof. Ndaeyo remains committed to overcoming these hurdles and maintaining the institution’s standard of excellence.
