Nigerians Only Pay Taxes When They See Real Value
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently emphasized that people only pay their taxes when they see tangible results. For him, it’s not enough to simply ask citizens to pay their dues – there must be a sense of accountability and transparency behind the funds collected.
Wike made this statement during his inspection of the dualization project on Kuje township road, which is being funded by the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
He recognizes that no government has the means to provide everything without making sacrifices. However, what’s crucial is finding a balance between the financial burdens placed on citizens and the services provided in return. According to Wike, when people see that their taxes are being wisely spent, they are more likely to contribute to the tax pool.
On the other hand, when taxes are paid without any visible progress, people become reluctant to contribute. This highlights the importance of effective resource allocation and prudent financial management. As the minister puts it, it’s all about implementing the right strategies and utilizing available resources efficiently.
To drive home this point, the FCTA is consistently striving to increase its Internally Generated Revenue, thus creating a more sustainable fiscal future for the city centre and area councils.
