Detained Minors Share Horrifying Experiences of #EndBadGovernance Protest
After being released from custody, several minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protest have opened up about their grueling two-month ordeal in Abuja. In an emotional interview with Punch, they recounted the harrowing conditions they faced, revealing prolonged periods of isolation and limited access to food.
One 15-year-old detainee, Umar Ali, recounted his experience, claiming he was arrested while heading to the market for work, despite having no involvement in the protest. He explained that they often went days without adequate food or sunlight, which significantly impacted their vision.
Ali strongly advises young people to steer clear of any form of protest, citing the severe treatment they endured despite his lack of involvement. He revealed that they frequently went up to three days without food, and when sustenance was available, it was barely enough to keep them going.
The minors also reported limited exposure to sunlight, with some struggling to see clearly during court appearances due to this prolonged lack of natural light.
Another detainee, 16-year-old Ibrahim Aliyu Musa, spoke about the trauma of being held alongside hardened criminals, frequently going without adequate food, and being served basic staples like beans, rice, and gabza – a crude corn-based meal.
A 13-year-old boy detained in Gadon Kaya, Gwale Local Government Area, revealed he was wrongfully accused of waving Russian flags and was held alongside criminals in Abuja’s Abattoir SARS facility.
The minors expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his intervention and urged their peers to exercise caution when engaging in activities that might jeopardize their future.
