Eguavoen’s Squad Selection: Assistant Coach Weighs In

Super Eagles Assistant Coach Speaks On Eguavoen’s Team Selection

Super Eagles Assistant Coach Confident in Squad Selection for Upcoming Qualifiers

As the Super Eagles prepare to take on Benin Republic and Rwanda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede has expressed his confidence in the team’s selection. The caretaker coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has introduced some fresh faces to the squad, including Gabriel Osho and Victor Collins, and brought back Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq, despite his challenges in La Liga.

Ogunmodede acknowledged that some players, such as Tolu Arokodare and Cyriel Dessers, have been in impressive form at their clubs, but emphasized that the coaching staff has carefully considered the roster. “The head coach has presented a comprehensive list after discussions with the back-room staff, and we believe these players have the competence to represent our nation well,” he said.

Ogunmodede highlighted the importance of Osho’s experience, despite being a new face due to his prior injury and surgery. Sadiq and Collins, he added, bring valuable experience to the team. The assistant coach, who also coaches Remo Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, emphasized that the team will approach each match like a cup final.

“We plan to approach every match to win,” he said. “Our primary goal is to qualify, but we also strive to win every game, with a focus on securing the maximum points available.” The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic next Thursday and Rwanda on November 14, as they look to conclude their qualifying campaign on a strong note.

The team currently leads Group D with 10 points from four matches and requires just one point from the next two games to secure a place in Morocco for the tournament in 2025.
