Nigerian-British Actor John Boyega Calls for Radical Overhaul of Nollywood Industry
Naijawebinfo reports that John Boyega, a renowned actor who rose to international fame in the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy, made the call for change during a recent panel session at AFRIFF.
Boyega, 32, emphasized that Nollywood needs to improve its filmmaking quality to compete with global standards, citing the success of Marvel’s Avengers and Black Panther at the global box office.
In his address, Boyega highlighted the importance of international collaboration, workshops, and learning opportunities to enhance the industry, as well as the need for government support.
The actor emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, urging Nollywood directors and producers to adopt a more open-minded approach, conduct thorough research, and encourage constructive criticism.
“Unfortunately, the filmmaking in Nollywood is not at the level it needs to be,” Boyega said. “We need to raise the standards. I want to see a Nigerian franchise that can make a billion naira at the global box office.” He emphasized the need for a new standard, citing the success of international films like Avengers and Black Panther.
“We need to change our mind and raise the standards,” Boyega urged. “The new standard should be why can’t we have those kinds of movies here? We saw how Black Panther went down in the global box office, and I think it’s time for us to learn from that.” He added that it’s essential to get off one’s high horse and become a student of the craft.
Boyega also emphasized the need for structural changes in the industry, including the adoption of new approaches to filmmaking, such as thorough research and collaboration. He urged directors and producers to be open to feedback and criticism, saying, “You are not there yet, and it’s important for someone to tell you that you’re not there yet, because how are you going to reach your full potential?”
In conclusion, Boyega emphasized the need for collaboration and a willingness to learn and adapt in order to create meaningful change in the Nollywood industry.
