Traffic Tragedy: 15 Killed, 13 Injured in Mairuwa Accident

A devastating accident occurred on Saturday in Mairuwa, a village along the Funtua-Sokoto highway, resulting in the loss of 15 lives and leaving 13 others injured.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the incident to preventable causes, including inadequate vehicle maintenance and the driver’s carelessness. According to reports, the accident occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus transporting passengers from Kano experienced a tire failure, causing the driver to lose control.

The bus collided head-on with a Sino truck owned by the Dangote Group, resulting in a high number of fatalities, with most of the victims being passengers on the bus. The accident involved a total of 28 people, including 23 male adults, one female adult, one male child, and three female children.

According to the FRSC statement, 13 people, including 11 male adults, one female adult, and one male child, were rescued with varying injuries and taken to Funtua General Hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, 15 others, comprising 11 male adults, one female adult, and three female children, lost their lives in the accident.

In response to the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed concern about the widespread problem of inadequate vehicle maintenance on Nigerian roads. He emphasized that adherence to traffic laws, including regular inspections and speed limits, could have prevented the accident.

Mohammed urged transport unions, fleet operators, and individual vehicle owners to prioritize safety by ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy. He also stressed the shared responsibility of all road users to maintain safe driving practices to prevent future accidents.
